Internships at Lisadell

Please find detailed information below on our internship programme

The following information will be of interest to anyone interested in pursuing an internship at Lisadell. Interested applicants are strongly advised to visit us for an Externship. An externship is a great way to get to know the hospital and see what the role entails. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Enquires should be made for the attention of Emma.

The interns duties include:

  • Monitoring and Treatments of in patients: The interns have primary responsibility for observation and monitoring of all hospitalised horses. The day starts with morning treatments and completing observations on in-patients.
  • Rounds: The interns round with our Surgeon and clinicians each morning, at this time the progress of all patients is monitored and treatment plans decided.
  • Anaesthesia: Surgery usually begins immediately after rounds, interns receive training in anaesthesia at the start of their internship. Thereafter, they rotate between anaesthesia and barn duties on a weekly basis.
  • Surgery: Often the "barn intern" will be required to scrub in and assist in surgeries and will gain valuable experience and exposure to a wide variety of surgical procedures.
  • Intensive care: We often have hospitalised patients, usually foals, which require intensive care and monitoring. The barn intern will have primary responsibility for the monitoring and treatment of these cases and will liaise with the vet in charge.
  • Hospital appointments: In the afternoons, we usually have a number of hospital appointments. The interns will assist the vet in charge with lameness examinations including performing diagnostic analgesia, certain medications, musculoskeletal ultrasound, digital radiography, shock wave therapy etc. The interns will also assist in medical work-ups including any related diagnostic procedures. With experience, interns may have the opportunity to take certain appointments as appropriate.
  • Assisted Reproduction: We board a number of mares every year for both chilled and frozen semen AI. Our interns assist the repro vets in this and will gain experience, under the guidance of our vets, in reproductive ultrasound, uterine lavage, insemination techniques and caslicks procedures. This is a unique aspect of this internship compared with most other Hospital based or rotating internships.
  • Ambulatory calls: Where appropriate, interns will have the opportunity to undertake certain ambulatory calls either on their own or accompanying one of our road vets.
  • Out of hours: The interns work a 1 in 2 out of hours night and weekend rota. During our busy season in the Spring there tends to be more night work with sick foals etc however this settles down for the rest of the year.
