Students and Internships

Visiting Veterinary students

At Lisadell Equine Hospital, we welcome and encourage students who wish to visit us to see practice. We only take one Veterinary and one Veterinary Nursing student at a time to ensure each student gains maximum experience during their stay.

What does an externship offer students?

  • Students are offered the opportunity to assist and observe in the everyday workings of the hospital including surgeries and lameness or other examinations.
  • Students will gain hands-on experience in many areas including Digital X-ray and Ultrasound, administering treatments and even assisting in surgery where appropriate.
  • Students will be supervised at all times and are expected to maintain strict confidentiality. We ask that you are willing and helpful in exchange for this experience and you may be asked to pitch in and help in all areas of the running of the practice.
  • You will also have opportunity to spend time with our ambulatory vets and gain valuable knowledge and insight into Equine practice in Ireland.
  • The nature of Equine practice means we have no set start and finish times and at busy times you may end up staying late! An externship is a great way to get to know us and learn more about our internships.

Do I need to have Equine experience? Due to high demand, from 2022 we will be prioritising placements for students who fit the following criteria:

- Students living locally (within Co. Meath/Louth) to the hospital in third year or higher looking to fulfil their Equine EMS requirements

- Students with an interest in pursuing Equine practice after graduation

- Students interested in pursuing an internship at Lisadell

How long does an externship last?  In general, we accept Veterinary Students for blocks of 2 weeks although longer placements can be arranged on request subject to availability.

How do I book? Please email the office at lisadellequinehospital@gmail.com  for the attention of Emma. It is essential that you include the following information:

  • Your University and your stage of study
  • Your exact dates of availability including preferred and alternative dates
  • A brief summary of why you would like to visit Lisadell detailing how you fulfil the above criteria if appropriate.
  • For placements of longer than 2 weeks or overseas students and those interested in an internship after graduation, please also provide a CV and cover letter.

Places tend to fill up quickly, sometimes as far as one year in advance so make sure to get in touch early.

We unfortunately cannot offer accommodation for students, however we can recommend a number of options in the area.

Nursing Students

We welcome all students regardless of experience, all we ask is that you show a keen willingness to learn! Please let us know if you are inexperienced or nervous around horses and we'll take this into account. For nursing students with limited experience, we advise visiting early on in your studies to gain exposure to horses which will allow you plenty of time to gain all your clinical skills comfortably.

Nursing students should send their applications to lisadellequinehospital@gmail.com for the attention of Irene.
Please include: your college, your stage of training and your exact dates of availability.

Internships

We offer 2 intern positions every year, each lasting for 12 months with a 6 month overlap between start times. This allows time for each intern to settle in and learn the ropes with the help of their more senior colleague. At Lisadell, the interns play a central role within the hospital having primary responsibility for the care of in-patients and performing anaesthesia for surgeries. The internships are suited to enthusiastic new or recent graduates seeking to build a solid foundation for a career in Equine Practice. Almost all of our past interns are now working in Equine practice however some have gone on to achieve further specialisation through residency programmes. We have past interns who are now board-certified Equine Surgical, Internal Medicine and Reproduction specialists.
